"it is clear that any failure was not on the part of the

intelligence community but on the part of white house decision-makers who should have listened to and acted on available intelligence. blaming those who put the line on the line is not the leadership this country needs." despite biden's claim last night, carney was vague today, when pressed specifically about the president intelligence briefing. >> the president was not told about security problems at benghazi, the consulate that had been targeted? >> i can tell you there was no actionable intelligence that suggested there would be an attack at the benghazi facility. >> officials say that is not a hedge. no intelligence suggesting that there was going to be an attack in benghazi. they believe inside the building that the attacks from romney and surrogates are driven by politics. >> ed henry on the north lawn. thank you. >> romney and paul ryan are at this hour appearing at a rally in crucial battleground state of ohio.

mouth the right way. >> bideryan was earnest. if not brand. the weakest moment was when he said the stimulus was wasteful spending. >> he sent me two letters saying by the way, can you send me stimulus money for companies here in state of wisconsin. we sent millions of dollars. you know why he said -- >> you did ask for stimulus? >> sure he did. >> on two occasions we advocated for constituents applying for grants. it's what we do. we did it for all constituents. >> i love that. i love that. >> romney continues to surge in battleground state polls. in florida, tampa bay times, "miami herald" poll has romney with the biggest lead in weeks. american research group poll shows romney leading narrowly in new hampshire. 50 to 46. >> the next presidential debate will be this coming tuesday on long island. then on friday, fox news learned romney plans another major policy speech. the next one on spending. trying to redouse the $16 trillion debt. so much of which he blames on

president obama. for wasteful government spending. >> bret: okay, carl. may dip in later in the show. thank you. "facts and truth don't have much to do with each other." observer might add nowhere does that apply more than in politics. doug mckelway takes a look at the facts and the truth from the vice presidential debate. >> they are the facts. they are the facts. >> vice president biden use the word "fact" or "facts" 26 times. ryan used it once. neither man were total fidelity to the truth. one exchange, he suggested seep yours receive more benefit under obamacare than medicare. >> a senior out there, ask yourself do you have more benefits today? you do. >> the vice president's statement was false according to data from the congressional budget office. cbo says for every $500 obamacare spends on preventive services in prescription drugs it cuts the rest of medicare by $7,385.

a cut to spending ratio of nearly 15 to 1. another question over obamacare had this clash of opinion. >> the actuary came to congress and said one out of six hospital and nursing homes are going to go out of business as a result of this. >> not that what they said. >> ryan is right, biden is wrong. >> the obama administration actuary richard foster told the house budget committee our simulations suggest 15% of the hospital providers would become unprofitable as a result of the spending cut. whether the expiration will lead to higher taxes on small business owners as ryan maintained biden said this. >> 97% of the small business in america pay less than, make less than $250,000. let me tell you who some of the other small businesses are. hedge funds that make $600,00 $600,000, $800 million a year.

that's what they count as small business. >> according to i.r.s. data, majority of small businesses pay taxes using individual rates so for the high wage earners is in effect. hike in the small business tax rate. mostly true for ryan. not so this comment from the wisconsin congressman on iran nuclear capabilities. >> when barack obama was elected, they had enough material, nuclear material to make one bomb and now they have enough for five. >> that's false. experts believe iran has not produced enough material to produce one bomb, let alone five. the two also scuffleed over obamacare mandate that requires catholic institutions to provide insurance coverage that close abortion drugs as well as contraceptives and sterilizations. >> they're infringing upon the first freedom. freedom of religion. infringing on the catholic charities, churches, and catholic hospitals. >> no religious institution, catholic or otherwise, including catholic social service, georgetown hospital, mercy hospital, any hospital,

suspect by the end of this weekend, main take-away from the debate could well be that benghazi was worse than we thought in terms of the incompetence of the administration and deception by the administration after the murder of the ambassador and the other americans. >> it seems like it's permeated the national consciousness. "new york times" saying it should have been on a-1. a lot of people talking about it. it seem like it's gotten the point of wait a second, what is the deal here? >> this is finally getting people's attention. last night, biden saying something that was obviously not true. anybody who is paying attention, he could i guess, depend what the meaning of "we" is because he is saying we didn't know. to me it seems he was saying we, the administration, didn't know. i'm wondering if he was even aware of the testimony. that is a question that needs to be asked. even if he says it wasn't the white house, i say who cares?

i don't expect the president to know about the requests made for the state department. state department knew they needed more security. they didn't act on it. why is biden not outraged by that? >> bret: in the debate, the vice president says the intelligence told us that they had the wrong information, they corrected it later. weeks later. intelligence community is full. later in the same debate he says listen, the intelligence is rock-solid, that iran is not going to get the bomb anytime soon. even should calm down a bit here. including israel essentially. on one side, intelligence community got it flat wrong. on the other side, everybody needs to chill out. >> consistency is not his strong suit. clearly it's a contradiction. clearly it's opportunistic to say we'll rely on intelligence here and we won't here. you know releans on intelligence which pretend we have on iran, there was a huge

whopper in there, there is no distance between us and vailedlies on the question when the iranians become a target. he said we in the israelis agree we will know when they build a weapon. when they build a weapon. this is precise through opposite of what netanyahu said in the general assembly speech. you can do in a laboratory, classroom and country largeer than the size of france. therefore, the only metric that you use, the red line has to be something you can see from the air and that is enrichment, because you have to have a huge facility. when you reach point of enrichment, that is the point of no run. that's the point of the cartoon bomb he was showing in richmond. biden said we agree we'll know when they agree weaponnization, which is a complete contradiction of what israelis said. i think it was less known, a little more subtle a point. it's the central argument
